I am traveling to Grand Cayman in July. I plan to arrive at the airport 3 hours before my flight. I do have a question about my luggage. I will have a connecting flight in Houston. I am flying on one airline, and that is Continental. My question is once I check my bags in my departing city, do I have to claim my bags and check in again at my connecting flight? I am praying that I don't have to do this because I only have 1 hour and 10 min. before my international flight.

it really depends on whether the airline knows your intentions. i've flown on Continental many times on connecting flights. when you buy a ticket that includes 2 segments (a connection), it's assumed that you want the bag to go to the final destination, so they will automatically tag your luggage that way when you check-in. i've also purchased the segments separately (instead of one long trip) and gotten 2 boarding passes, and even then, the agent asked if i wanted my bag checked all the way to the final destination. so just make sure to let the agent know when you check-in. truth is, you can always change your mind afterwards (e.g., you suddenly want the bag checked through the connection while still at your departing city), it just involves a bit more work and some worker finding and then hand-tagging your bags.

The label on your bags identify your arrival destination for the baggers, so they will know to unload the plain and drive to the connecting flight and re load all luggage that is labeled for that plain you are connecting on.

Don't worry.

Usually not. I had to retrieve and re-check my luggage on a couple of ocasions only (Philly to Hong Kong, retrieve and re-check in Toronto & Vancouver and Paris-Philly, retrieve it and re-check in Washington DC) and I have been flying quite a bit. If your origin is within another city in the US, then Houston, then Cayman, you should not have to retrieve suitcases.

Enjoy your time, I am envious! :)

Cheers,

no .. if you are flying on the SAME airline, they will check your bags the whole way through. If you still feel uncertain, then double check the attendant when you check your bags.
