Moraly, go back and get your correct amount. Before I would say take the money and split. One time someone I know paid with a $10 and the lady gave them change for a $100. But it also sucks when you're the cashier and you're almost $100 short in your box. So I give it back.

Of course this kind of thing tends to happen in the US a lot, especially to tourists and foreigners who are unfamiliar with the notes (bills). Why on earth are US dollars the same size and shape and the same colour green? It will make mistakes like this easier. In other countries the paper money is a different size, colour and design for each denomination. On British pounds and on Euro notes there are even markers and identifiers for the sight impaired and blind.
But back to the question - it depends how much you are over paid and how many times you have been short changed by sales assistants, cashiers etc.
If it is a lot of money change of 50 pound/Euro/dollar when the note offered was 5 pound etc then yes give it back. For smaller amounts well businesses build in this kind of mistake and eventually we all pay for it in the form of higher prices.

By over paid, do you mean by an employer? If that's the case, I would let them know and let them decide if it was a mistake or intentional.

If I got too much change in a store or restaurant or something, I would return it.
