although i'm an atheist, i do conjure a mental image. it is sort of a thin pastel haze amid the blackness of space. it doesn't make me believe, it's just a mental abstract for use in thinking

I am a Christian.
When I was a kid, I used to think of Him as a kindly old Grandfather.
Now, my mental image is less human and more of a bright, warm sun, full of love.

Interesting question.

When I was being raised, I was taught to believe that God was all forms and none...transcendental and beyond form.

When I hear the evengelicals talk about God, though, I easily imagine a big, scary, egomaniacal bearded war chief...or an equally psychotic bearded old man sitting among the clouds. The primitive and outrageous claims made on God's behalf by these evangelicals make me think of petty tyrants demanding tribute from anyone they could intimidate.

when i think of God, a mental picture never really shows up. I believe as a christian that God is way too beautiful, perfect, and holy for our imperfect minds to comprehend. Some christians can tell you other things, it's an opinion rather than a pure fact of what God really looks like- so that's just my take on it
i don't know if you're a christian or not, but just thinking about God calms my soul-Instead of a picture, i just imagine his creation, and the beauty inside of that. There i can just see a small glimpse of what he has in store for me :-)

I think of horrible people with a zealous gleam in their eye, merrily torturing people to death because they feel they're justified in doing so to any and all "unbelievers". Oh, the inquisition and the witch burnings were a glorious time for god believers, no?

I don't get a mental picture of the sky fairy himself, since it's imaginary anyway. I just think of all the horrible thing that "God's" followers have done in His name through the years.

Why would Atheists have a mental image of God?

Back when I was little, I thought God was a big, white-bearded man who sat in a giant purple armchair on a cloud. Now that I'm bigger, I think of God as intangible or non-existent (I'm agnostic).

When I praise God, I see brilliant light and illumination and I envision a likeness on a Throne surrounded by arch that is emerald green as mentioned in Revelations. There is no face but a body like ours. Not sure why I see Him that way but its all good.

My mental image, my 'qualia' as it were, is literally beyond words. I do not 'visually' image the view of the Christian Deity. It is a 'feeling', an 'impression' of concepts that tend to clash in impossible ways.

bright light, good Great virtue, emitting from the throne, rainbow colors overhead, fire and smoke, from under, unlimited power sits.. some usage as God expresses his thoughts, and emotions, His capacity to love and to feel hurt is very large. God is spirit, sensitive... yet unlimited power.

The Bible says do not make graven images, and I take that as even an image of God. God is beyond my comprehension, and for me to imagine Him would actually be almost an insult to Him.
Its actually kind of weird that I can have the most personal relationship with something I can't even comprehend.
