My daughter has been just diagnosed with a hypothyroid. Her thyroid is swollen. I feel like I should take to a specialist that deals specifally with kids in this area. My doctor has referred us to a specialist here in our town. My gut says go with a Ped. Endocrinologist. What should I do?

From working in a hospital in both the adult and pediatric settings, I have learned if you are close to a pediatric hospital, taken her to the peds endocrinologist. They are more specialized working with children and dealing with their bodies. 14 years old is young to have hypothyroid and more may need to be looked into as to why she is having it at this age. Children need to be treated like children not like little adults.

I would definitely opt for the pediatric endocrinologist myself. For one, the pediatric endocrinologist will be more aware of hypothyroidism as it affects her age group. Also, pediatric doctors tend to be so much more considerate and nice.

I had similar problems when I was a teenager. I saw a normal endocrinologist and wish I hadn't. They were rather rough, pressed for time, etc.

Just because your primary care doctor referred you doesn't necessarily mean that the ordinary endocrinologist is anything spectacular. If you feel better, you could always look up the credentials and history, if any, of the pediatric endocrinologist you find.

Good luck!

Probably a regular endocrinologist will be fine. She's a little young for a thyroid condition but they aren't as unusual as you think (or at least not as unusual as I thought until I was diagnosed). I'm sure the regular one is going to be fairly experienced with young women.

But if you think you would be more comfortable with someone who specializes with children go ahead. I don't know how easy that will be to find since most women are diagnosed with a thyroid conditions in their early twenties.

Hope this helps

I would go with what your doctor told you to do. If this endorinologist feels that your daughter should go to a pediatric one, he will be able to refer you to someone that he respects (that way you don't have to try and find one and worry about them not being the greatest). I hope everything turns out well for your daughter.

Go to the one your doctor told you to go to. Yes she may only be 14 but she needs to see some one your doctor trust. You trust your doctor right ... if not you should get a new one.
