Haha, my cat does that
We put a little mat in front of the catbox...so it will catch the litter.
They have cool catboxes at petco..
some with top entry's...so your cat can't kick it all his crap out of the box...
And others with stairs....

It might not look the best, but take a cardboard box that is at least twice as high if not higher than the cat box. Cut out one side so the cat has full access, set the cat box inside the cardboard box, it will prevent flying cat litter on 3 sides. Some cats are just more aggressive when they are burying or digging in their box. I have one cat that is very dainty, and one that acts like she has to shovel it all out side the litter box. You cant stop their behavior just slow down the mess they make

Well, he's playing. I've had that with cats and just sort of built a wall around the litter box to try and keep the litter in as much as possible. You might wwant to try different kinds of litter. maybe it's the litter he doesn't like, but I really think it's just his way of making sure he has covered everything up, very very well. You could try changing the litter more often, like daily.

We had this problem, too. Part of the problem is that they can get very focused on burying their excrement, and don't care what goes flying where. Add to this the fact that litter tends to get caught between the pads of their paws, so that they walk it to other areas of the house. We put down a carpet tile right outside the entrance to their covered litter box (which they got used to after a while), and they seem to leave most of it there as they walk away.
You don't say how you introduced the covered pan. Did you cuddle and pet them and give them treats as you did? Did you try these tactics several times before you gave up? They have to learn to associate using this kind of commode with good things, so that they're more willing to use it. Two of mine are so used to the covered commode that they jump on top of it to demand brushing every morning!

The make covered boxes with doors and without. If he won't use either, they also make a litter box that has a large lip on it that sticks in over the litter box to prevent the flinging of litter.
Good luck.

Put the litter box in a bigger cardboard box with a hole cut in one side for the door.
Unfortunately, this is the joy of owning cats. I have two very messy boys too. I have covered in toilets for them which has helped a lot with the mess but I will still have to sweep at least once every two days. Get a dust buster.

What did he do when you had the covered box?
I think the only thing you can really do is use the covered box, maybe drop a line to a cat behaviourist and ask for some advice?

you have probally tried this but i find the best thing is to get a really deep bin even if it is not a litterbox and put in very little litter
also some cats only go in clear covered boxes....
another thing most cats love cardboard boxes just set the litter box in one on its side so she can go in... sounds genious to me...

Ours use ta' do the same thing! I resolved the problem by cleanin' litter each day. I also add some carpet fresh to it after cleanin' it. Change litter itself once a week or so (use common sense)...
