not a single one of these people have a clue what they are talking about. The radio is built into the panel that also has the heating controls on it.
the only way to do it, would be to buy an aftermarket panel with the heating controls on it, then buy the mounting brackets for a single DIN radio.

this is what you need.
And no, it isnt a stupid question, it is quite common with zx2 owners looking to upgrade the radio. Most of them dont know that these kits are out there.

I don't know the details of the 99 ford escort's console layout but if it's like any other car without a standard slot for a head unit you would need to purchase a replacement frame for the console that has standard sized slots to accept aftermarket head units. (or i guess cut your own hole heh)

Andy W is correct... but you have to be willing to remove the actual switches for the a/c and such from your factory radio to put in the replacement face plate....
Check out crutchfield.com as they sell the plate also but will send detailed instructions on how to do it that are easy to read... and sell the wires to plug the new stereo into the factory harness without cutting the factory pigtail

Mounting kit is essential.
Its ugly though, be forewarned. Its huge and flat-the rest of your car isnt. If you have the ability you may want to look into a bit of modification on it so its not so out of place and hideous.

go to the car audio store and get an installation kit. it fits in the hole and fills in the extra space. we did it with another car of ours, similar situation. easy to do yourself or cheap to have them do it.
