the thing is he really isnt formally my boyfriend. he never asked me out, but we countlessy said 'i love you' to each other. when i ask him why he doesnt ask me out, he tries to change the subject and doesnt like talking about it. is there a chance that he or his family is racist towards me?

hmmm im asian too and thiws sounds really familiar.
it sounds like he is probably in a dilemma, he probably genuinely likes you or loves you but doesntthink his parents would take it too well...thats probably why he is not askin you out cos if he does then ur officially his girlfriend and it would be wierd if you couldnt hang out with him at his own place once in a while...you know the deal,.....maybe he doesnt know how to deal with it and so he's just avoiding the situation...however he needs to be aware that you are considering his actions as race related and you should discuss it with him...once its out in the open try to tell him how you feel and ask him if he feels genuinely about you...if he answers yes then ask him if its because of your colour that he is unsure of whether to ask you out....tell him that you are aware that he may be in a dilemma and that you wont take offence if he just tells you the truth....
you have to remembe rthat you are human and you cant just sit there and wait for him to tell you eventually...the time to find out is now....cos u dont want to waste your time, your emotions and feelings after a guy who isnt strong enough to be with you and honestly if he doesnt come out with it even after you trying to be understanding you should leave him cos he obviously doesnt have the strength to be with you officially forget looking into the future!

There's a pretty good chance he doesn't really love you if you don't go out. Talk is cheap, but taking you on dates costs money that he's not willing to spend. Sorry, but I think he's playing games- his family doesn't matter if he's not even willing to date you.

It is possible but then it is possible that your family is racist towards him. Why jump to that conclusion? Because he is white? That's not fair.
If he is avoiding a real commitment it's probably because he is a jerk. (or just not ready) rather than saying he is racist why not talk to him.

Seriously, he says he loves you but wouldn't ask you out? He has some issues girl, maybe he's ashamed of being seen with you. He's not worth your time.
