I had a root canal done over a year ago and the dentist didn't put a crown on it. It is 3 over from my front tooth on the bottom. I noticed it on my way to work. The actual tooth itself isn't hurting, thank God, but the gums and teeth around are pounding. I have called all the dentists in town and they are telling me I have to be a patient there to be seen after-hours. Does anyone have any pain relieving ideas since I am at work and unable to see a doctor until in the morning. (I am having to pull a double shift, which is even worse). Thank you for your time.

I've been there. Broke a tooth in 3 pieces (after an un-capped root canal) and it remained in the gum. Horrible. I just took Ibuprofen until morning.

You should take Advil or Motrin 600-800 mg dose for the inflammation and swelling. Also rinse with warm salt water several times a day, as warm as you can stand it without burning your self. The tooth has re-abscessed, split or fractured (making it non non-restorable) or it could just be an infection in the surrounding tissue. Try to get the first appointment you can so you'll be given antibiotics to help clear up the infection in this tooth. I hate that this has happened after a root canal, but they do need to be crowned as soon as possible after a RCT is completed. Good luck with your up coming appointment.

FOR THE GUM TRYING PLACING ORAJEL OR AMBESOL ON THE GUM - THIS IS ONLY A TEMPORARY RELIEF. TAKE SOME IBUPROFEN (ADVIL) TO HELP THE PAIN AND INFLAMMATION. NEVER PUT AN ASPIRIN ON THE GUM, THIS WILL RUIN YOUR GUM AND MAY CAUSE AN ESTHETIC DEFECT.
