Merchants and retailers now have the option of 'scan processing' your check. Meaning that the magnetic numbers at the bottom of your check are linked to a network similar to credit cards. Hence, merchants and retailers are able to 'swipe' your check and debit your account instantly.

However, the merchant or retailer must be 'set-up' for this process. Most major merchant and retailers are already set-up and it is not long before most others will follow.

Since there is no place that you can go to verify if a particular retailer is set-up in this way, it is best to have the available funds in your account prior to the issuance of the check.

Your question is somewhat vague but here are some answers. Local checks clear according to how often businesses make deposits and whether the deposit falls on a Friday. Larger businesses like Wal-Mart generally clear in about 1 day, nearly the same as a debit card. A lot of cc companies are debiting accounts the same way as Wal-Mart, on the date they receive your check. It will say on the statements you receive every month if the money is automatically deducted from your account when they receive the check.

it depends on who took the check.
The days of 'floating' checks at businesses is OVER. Ended about three years ago. MOst take a picture of the check and give it back to you. The removal of money is INSTANT from your bank to walmart and stores of the like. Almost like using a debit card when they money is placed on hold in your account while the official paperwork takes place....
Sending a check in for payment is a bit different. Since it has to travel from your place to theirs and theirs is usually a drop box. Once there it will be processed by underpaid and overworked people.

So I guess to answer your question I would need more information.
But no longer than 4 days would be my guess.

The newest systems allow them to process almost immediately, so there is no longer the 3 day cat and mouse game of trying to get the deposit money there in time to cover.
