Because before the industrial revolution, fish in Europe were generally more plentiful than meat. Since meat was the treat, it was what you gave up for lent. Or something.

Fish used to be the poor man's food, and meat was a luxury. People avoided meat during Lent, and on every Friday for many years in commemoration of the suffering of Jesus. They didn't want to enjoy luxuries.
Now, meat is relatively cheap, and fish is a luxury for inlanders, so its lost a lot of the symbolism.

Fish is not normally considered "meat". It's white meat like chicken but at the time the bible was written fish was their main source of food... especially as the disciples were fishermen. Fish is still considered meat during Lent.

Some vegetarians don't consider fish to be meat.
Someone once told me the fish on Friday principle (it used to be all year round) was something established in order to help the fishing industry. I have no idea if that is true or not.

Fish isn't meat at any time, by the laws of kashrut, which are what matter for the point.
I think its also partially a point about blood, its an entirely different form of animal...

Since I am Catholic.....I should probably know. But it may just be part of the Church Tradition. Our Catholic ancestors may not have recognized it as meat because it came out of the water, and therefore, our generation continues that tradition. Then again, I could be totally whacked.

I really don't know, but have always appreciated the catholics for starting that. I remember taking my whole family out for cheap fish and chips on Friday night. I never was a catholic. I just had a lot of hungry kids and friday night fish was really cheap. Thanks Catholics.
Humn the sandwitch idea sounds good too.

Because fish aren't mammals. They're actually meat, but people don't categorize them in the same way.
