Reward them with dog treats whenever they do something right. Vary it with praise and affection. Always reinforce the good behavior that you want. No point punishing bad behavior, it only frightens the dog of you and they don't understand cause and effect, anyway. Set aside training time each day, it doesn't have to be much, 15 minutes to an hour a day. Most dogs are enthusiastic learners--they like pleasing you and of course they are interested in the treats. And they do like to learn. A good lesson for a dog to learn is to stop and sit down at every curb, it can save their life. Good luck!

Well, this will be a crash course but,
Do it the SAME time every day.
Keep sessions about 30 min.
Work on only ONE thing,
after training session, work on those already known.
BE PATIENT
If dog is having trouble, make sure you end on a high note.
Start with treats after command and as the dog learns what you want, if it does not do it, like getting up to quick from "Stay" and not being realeased, do not give them a reward.
To start,
Get dogs attention, point to you eyes (usually the hand with the treat in it) , tell the dog, (say name) "Buffy, watch me"
After eye contact say dogs name and give command.
If a new command, put the dog in the position you want (down, sit, ect) And when they are there, give the treat and PRAISE THEM LIKE CRAZY. I know you may feel stupid, but you dog will understand that you are happy with it.
I have never figued out how to get a dog to fetch, but I am going to try and figure it out.
One of the BEST things you can do is to enroll the dog in a class like at PetSmart. It is great. It will teach your dog how to be socialized with other dogs and teach you how to teach them.
I put one of my dogs thru it and she was the best dog ZI ever had. There was nowhere that I could not take her!!!
Good luck!

Heeling is a pretty basic obedience exercise but it still is best taught by joining an obedience class with a good instructor who can help you figure out the perfect leash length, where your dog should be in heel position and the timing for treats if they use food to motivate the dog. Fetching is not nearly as easy as heeling, and is a more advanced obedience exercise. I would advise joining some obedience classes. Some breeds like retrievers are easier to teach to fetch than other breeds.

Well I taught my dog everything he knows. I taught him by instead of taking him to all those classes I made it fun for both of us. We played together. In your case for fetch we would play with his favorite toy. And I would throw it and when he brought it back to me I would praise him saying stuff like, "Good boy Buddy, Fetch. Fetch Buddy good boy!" and sooner or later he would master that skill. You could say fetch to him and he would go get the toy. but for this method you have to do it everyday. But I dont think that that is such a problem because you dont have to just set aside some time to play it could be done any time during the day. For all the tricks I taught him I made sure their was some sort of hand signal that I did every time he fetched in this case I pointed. I did this because as dogs get older they do start to lose their hearing. So when he does start to lose his hearing I can just point to his toy and he will get it. I dont even have to say anything. And every once in a while I will just use the hand signals (no talking) that I made up for all his tricks so that he remembers what they are. This is the first time I have ever used this method on a dog. But it seems to have worked so much better than my other ways because he listens to me everytime. I might have to repeat my self 1 or 2, every once in a while but he knows what you want he just doesnt want to do it. but he still ends up listening. If you have anymore questions about this training method please ask me.

Waaayyy too much to get into on a yahoo answers.
So I am going to quickly tyoe in a few pointers and hopefully others fill in the blanks,
The best thing you can do for your dog is GROUP training.
THis way you get socialization, your dog will work under distractions! A professional will show you how to handle your dog!
this isnt how to teach your dog the commands but a couple tips,..
**10 minute training sessions, keep it fun so they dont get bored
**Do not repeat your command, only say it once or your dog will learn that she can wait until the fifth time you say it to comply
**Never say a command unless you are going to get off your butt and make them do it,.. I call that investing in Laziness
** teach puppies comands separately before you add together,(ie. come/stay)
**one word commands ie. "sit" not "sit down"
** Mark the desired behaviour at the exact moment,.. ie. good girl! the moment her butt hits the floor!

Step a million commence with something basic, fantastically in case you haven’t tried coaching your canine something new for a on a similar time as. in case you’ve in no way taught it any tricks, undergo in strategies that the extra your canine thinks this is a recreation, the extra keen it is going to be to examine. settle on precisely what trick you prefer to artwork on first. Step 2 p.c.. a time of day while your canine is lively and once you have time to artwork with it. Step 3 teach your canine the handle, then gently teach it what you opt for it to do. If it does it even by utilising twist of destiny, reward and compliment them, utilising the call of the trick once you do--“stable take a seat” or “stable rollover.” Be enthusiastic once you compliment. each and each time you attempt the trick, positioned the canine in the placement you opt for or teach it what you opt for it to do on a similar time as giving the command (take a seat, lie down), then do it returned, in simple terms giving the command without demonstrating. Step 4 Spend a minimum of 10 minutes at a time engaged on a clean trick. If the 1st consultation’s a dud, don’t lose heart. one in all 2 issues could be happening--your canine the two “gets” what you opt for yet doesn’t opt for to do it or in simple terms doesn’t get it. right here’s a secret. in case you have a breed widespread for its intelligence, this is attempting to fool you into thinking it’s dumb! Don’t fall for it! yet wait and notice. If Fid gets it and there’s a yummy handle in keep for doing it, your puppy will come around with encouragement and repetition. Step 5 Make education exciting to your canine. once you’re working to coach it a clean trick, have it do one or 2 of the tricks it already is conscious till now and after engaged on the hot one. Then pass returned and attempt the hot one returned till now quitting. all of it reinforces that it’s a clean recreation and there’s a “cookie” for doing stable. on the tip of each and every consultation, no count if or no longer it did the trick precise, compliment your canine for being a affected person and stable buddy. This reinforces it’s “exciting time.”

Getting treats that he/she likes. I wouldn't buy biscuits. I would also recommend getting a ball that they like (bouncing balls are pretty cool) throw it around the house and get the dogs attention. :] Have fun!
