I have a place that sells manufactured Athames, but I’m considering actually making one from scratch. Do you think a blade forged by the user is better than one mass manufactured, for use in ritual?

If it's that important to you, go ahead and do it, but I'll tell you, I got plenty energy from a black-handled steak knife from Target for a couple years. (I use one bought from an occult store now.) The important things are that it is set aside only for magickal use if at all possible, and that it has meaning for you.

Athames are best if made by the user yes. But one made of stone or wood be actually the the most ancient. All metals are to be divested from the circle before entering this applies to athames. More magnetism power you blade will have being non metal !

Hand made is always to be prefered.
My athame is made of wood, carved by hand (sadly, not mine though), in the form of a proper japanese boken. When I first consecrated it, the first thought to enter my mind was, "I am Spirit-Render, and I am hungry." So, 'Spirit-Render' is what I've called it since. When I hold it, it feels dark, potent, and fiery, a 'blade' of destruction and devastation. About right for something to come from my subconscious. *chuckles*

i understand it to be, that you must be given an athame, as a gift, or find something you already own. Making your own would fall under those guidelines, and probably be more powerful, since you made with your own hands, and to your own liking.
I also read that its a free country and you can cast using whatever you have, but it's not recommended you purchase any tools, made commercially, or by a strangers hand,

Get a scraggly one, and then rub it with poison before stabbing people!
Just kidding, I'm not up with spellcraft, but I suppose if it's like anything else, something built to your personal needs is always better than a mass manufactured one.

anything that you personally make is going to be better, because you've put your creative energies into it.
