Try doing some freelance work for a local newspaper or periodical. If you live in an area of the country that has a lot of lakes and mountains and therefore lots of nature, then try doing some freelance work for the local tourism or wilderness groups. I wouldn't worry too much about competition, for if you take your craft seriously and learn all you can. Banks and Public buildings sometimes take local photography and display the pictures prominently. While you are in college, try to get on the newspaper or whatever publication there is. Get enough photos together and you can even put a book together, especially if you have a theme. Like, I don't know, let's say you're in the Washington, D.C. area, and you have many pictures of the Potomac River in all the seasons. Sounds like a decent idea for a book, right?
Whatever, good luck on that!

There are lots of different photography jobs. My photography job was eliminated because of digital photography. I worked in a huge statewide lab for Kodak. That is gone now. Just those dirty little machines at Wal-Mart, etc. that are never cleaned properly and ruin millions of negatives with their filth. You have to decide the type of photography you can choose. It isn't all glamour. It is very expensive to compete in the film format industry so good luck. I see alot of Photographers sleeping under bridges these days.
