I was wondering if anyone knows of any programs on the internet that would teach me how to play guitar. No full of himself famous guitarist just showing off how good he is and discoraging others. I mean like a program I can download and use for free that would teach me how to play and test my skills.O yeah I only have an acoustic so lessons for acoustic guitar playing would be good. I have no idea how to teach myself guitar because I hardly know anything about it or what to play. The only thing I can play really is the main riff where its all open string for "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica. So please help me. I really want to learn this instrument.

Look up Guitar Player Magazine online. Theres videos an transcriptions. Usually the forums are people just trying to show off knowlege, so you might pick up something from there. There really is not a difference between acoustic and electric, though a few techniques such as bending strings an pitch harmonics will be a little harder.

Acoustic Guitar magazine has a website with free on-line lessons. It's www.acousticguitar.com. They also have several different message boards which cater to players of different levels. I've found the folks there to be very helpful and extremely motivating and guess what? Not an ***hole in the bunch!! I learned about the Travis picking style from there a few years ago and now I'm a dedicated finger-picker. There are some great books with CDs on the market that will allow you to compare what you're playing with what the instructor on the CD is playing. You can find a book on practically any guitar style. If you're not sure about what to get, you can read different reviews on amazon.com or ask someone at you local music store. "The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking" is a good book/CD to start with if you like this style of playing but you should have some basic chord knowledge first. Mark Knoppfler and Chet Atkins are fingerpicking virtuosos. I know that the acousticguitar website carries beginners books that can help you get started with the basics. Buying a good beginners book will be a cheap monetary investment but it will pay off big-time because you will have some kind of structured practice regimen with which to gage your progress (as opposed to playing a bunch of random downloaded error-filled guitar tabs from the internet).

Playing the guitar is alot of fun and it's always more more fun when you can play with others. Good luck, be kind and patient with yourself and keep practicing!!! (PS: Why is it that certain players turn into ***holes once they can play a few songs? You shouldn't let those guys get you down. ANYONE can learn to play if they're willing to make a commitment to practice.)

If you are serious about this, go find a teacher. There are plenty of teachers out there who can help you focus on the style you want to learn. Ask at your local music store (the kinds that sell instruments).

The real issue here is this: If you start teaching yourself, you will learn habits that will damage your playing. And those habits can take years to unlearn, if ever.

You'd be better off to go to a music store and get a good beginning guitar book (you might end up playing little kids songs). Look through one and pick one that looks good, and be sure to learn the basics! scales, arpegios, chords. You might not believe it but the boring stuff is how you really get better.

Look for anything from Hal Leonard. I am sure there is a lot of stuff online, but it wouldn't hurt to pick up one of his teaching books.
