I'm not a police officer, but I can answer for my husband. His dad was a police officer, so he always had the feeling he might enjoy the role. Even though he thought he'd enjoy it, he resisted and did many things before becoming an officer. He wasn't satisfied with any of them. Ultimately, he listened to the feeling he'd had for years and decided to apply (at age 31). He loves his job and says it's the first time he's never dreaded his day. I feel that if a person has the feeling that he would enjoy the profession, he should apply. It's not for everyone, but the fact that you're even thinking about it is a great first step.

I signed up for the free educational benefits in 1969. They pay for your college degree and then give you a heck of a raise when you get it (or at least they did under LEAA). By the time I got my degree, I had three kids and was involved in Crime Scene Investigation (1973 to 1983) so I stayed for the pension (1990). I had originally intended becoming a Conservation Officer (Game Warden). I guess you could say that it snuck up on me.

Many reasons, for one I almost got into an accident with a drunk driver who ran a red light and also when you know that in this life you can help so many people, whether it's helping save a teenager from going down the wrong path in his life or saving a person's life from murder.
