Heaven....... there's no doubt about it. Patty Melts came from heaven !!

A patty melt is a type of hamburger sandwich consisting of a hamburger patty and cheese between two slices of bread (usually rye, sourdough, or Texas toast.). The sandwich is then grilled so that the cheese melts thoroughly. It commonly includes pieces of sautéed onion, and at some places may include salad dressing.

Despite the simplicity of the patty melt, it seems to be easier to find at sit-down restaurants and independent hamburger places, than at corporate franchisees. This may be because of difficulty ensuring the availability of enough bread of "the proper size" on a continental or global scale, or because grills that can simultaneously support both the high temperature for cooking meat and the low heat for grilling buttered bread are not widely installed.

Despite this, it is a staple part of the Waffle House menu.

The patty melt is also a popular item at Steak n Shake, along with a similar sandwich, the chicken melt.

I love patty melts..
I don't know why you would call it weird though.. it's just:
hamburger
grilled onions
cheese
on grilled rye or wheat bread.. it's almost like a hamburger! It is a hamburger...lol.

Oh and I believe it originated in Ireland.. ( Hint: "Patty" melt..)
Good Luck!
