Just wondering on if it is a known felony and if your caught and what would be your punishment.

Yes, its illegal and if you can catch and actually hold my 4 legged land shark for ranson, I will sign over my car and house to you????? And if not, I hope you have great medical insurance.

Clearly, it is illegal to knowingly take someone's personal property (crime #1). Then to ransom the animal would probably be considered extortion (crime #2), and you would probably also be charged with cruelty to animals (crime #3).
