Sydney. I have lived in both and they are both great cities but I prefer Sydney. Sydney has mild dry winters while Melbourne is cold and wet. Sydney also has the Harbour and beaches while Melbourne has Port Phillip Bay and excuses for beaches.
Melbourne is closer to the mountains and a day in the snow in winter is practical. Sydney is five hours from the ski fields. Both have excellent nightlife and restaurants, theatre and music.
The cities are different. Each has its good and bad points. Melbourne houses are a little cheaper than Sydney but large areas of Melbourne are very flat while Sydney has hills. Melbourne has two or three footy games a week, Sydney has one a fortnight when the Swans are playing at home. Sydney is a much more beautiful city than Melbourne but Melbourne has wonderful parks and gardens
Anyone is going to be biased when recommending one or the other. As I said my preference is for Sydney and that preference is shared by nearly 5 million people. On the other hand, 4 million people live in Melbourne and regard that as the better city.
If beaches are important to you, choose Sydney. Otherwise, toss a coin you won't be disappointed in either city.

Melbourne! one of the most liveable city in the world! But again it depends on what you prefer! Generally, Melbourne is a better place to reside and migrate!

Melbourne... it's cultural, funky and alotta fun! Less expenisve housing too. Also country Victoria is beautiful and very charming.
Sydney is just your average big city... over priced, a wee bit polouted and very touristy. Definatley a great place to see and visit, but just doesn't compare to Melbourne.

Melbourne. It's more relaxed, it's cheaper and it's friendlier. Shopping is great, food is amazing, beaches are mostly out of town but worth the trip, nightlife is alive and varied, housing is better value - both money and size and the city is full of old historic buildings and peaceful parks and gardens.
