I've been cutting down a lot...I usually smoke about 12 cigs a day but for the last couple days I've only had 2. I want to just have one tonight, and make it my final cigarette ever! Only thing is..I'm really afraid I won't be able to do it. My boyfriend whom I have a long-distance relationship with is here only until Sunday..and after he's gone, I don't think I'll be able to distract myself enough to keep it out of my mind. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice to help me follow through? Is it safe to use the patch while on birth control? Thanks in advance.

Did the patch. Stopped for a couple of weeks.
Did the gum. Stopped almost 4 months.
Went cold turkey and haven't had a cigarette in 12 years.

If you get your head together and get past the first 3 weeks, you'll be fine. But you can't go to the bar or you'll want a cigarette. You can't hang around the friends who smoke or you'll want a cigarette. You have to change your behavior if you're going to succeed. One trick is that if you ABSOLUTELY have to bum a cigarette, bum one from somebody who smokes the brand you absolutely can't stand (in my case it was Kools and Salems...pine trees in a mint sauce). A couple of puffs and you'll be done with the foul thing.

One other trick that an osteopath taught me is that when you're craving a cigarette you're actually wanting to suck something. So if you get a pack of red licorice and cut them into cigarette sized pieces, you can suck on them and keep one in your hand til you're over the urge. It sounds corny, but it really did the trick.

Most people try to associate other things like a pencil or pen instead of cigarettes. Maybe you can try bringing out a tupperware of carrot sticks as a healthy alternative.
If you can go down to 1 a day, your nicotine addiction won't be that strong, I am sure you can do it.
By the way, I am a smoker for almost 18 years, I am not able to quit, but had found ways to reduce it.

Take care.

Just come up with ways to distract yourself when you want a cig. Write to him, call him, put together a photo album, call non-smoking friends, go to non-smoking places or get out and take a walk, drink lots of water, have carrot sticks and celery sticks available and also chocolate. Make sure you do not have ANY cigs in the house or car or at work. You can do it if you really have your mind set to it. If I can do it, anyone can.

It is not very good to smoke while pregnant.... My cheer coach used to do it, and it wasn't right! I suggest Nicorette it will help stop the smoking but you have be willing to try not to, it only helps if you want to, if you are doing it because your pregnant then that won't work.... I REALLY suggest first, try to stop and have people hide them or something... If that dosen't work, then really try the Nicorette.... I hope it works!!

And Good Luck with your Boyfriend!!!

Think about the flip side / my shoes

No normal sex
No travel
Rare going out, just to postively no smoking Resturants
Spend all day Fri, waiting for 02 delivery
About $5,000 for hosp and Drs/Meds after ins.
Can't fly to see grandkids
Dealing with medical "side effects"

Just the tip of the problems

It ain't fun, I promise

If you don't want to use a pill then here are some things you can do to quit. First, throw those ciggies away! Or try chewing gum instead. Or try some Tic-Taks.

try the new medicine Chantix, it really helps. You need a prescription. It works by blocking the brains reaction to nicotine, hence no cravings. Then all you have to get through are the habit things, looking for them in your car, etc.

Use the patch and while you use it - don't smoke! The amount of nicotine you give to your body might be too much, then.
