I left religion because it didn't make any sense to me. I laughed when I think about what I used to believe. However, I do still believe in God although I can't explain why. Do you think it's just the leftover from religion brainwashing 25 years of my life?
Or is it just in the human nature to need something to worship? According to history, my ancestors in South East Asia hundreds of years ago were animists, proven that they believe in God before gospel. So, could it be in my blood? I'm just coming back to my root?
What's your opinion and what's your story?
PS. When they said 'non-believer' is it us because we don't believe in religion or it's not us because we believe in God?

God is a construction of needing to look up to a leadership figure, and mirrors our own societal structure and even animals'.
It's no coincidence that most conceptions of God make "him" look and act exactly the way people would want. He is a leader that tells us what we want to hear, and he is so powerful that you shouldn't have any doubt in believing him.
It's because there are so many unanswered questions (why are we here? what is our purpose? what happens after death?) that people will grasp at an idea that they derive comfort from.
I'm an agnostic because I can't fathom the answers to those kinds of questions and science hasn't (yet) been able to answer them. But believing in fairy tales (religious dogma) and even denying scientific evidence so as to not disturb the illusions created by religion is really sad.

The main problem is that most people seem to believe that you have to have a religion in order to believe in God. That is the brainwashing of the major religions, and is definitely not true. It is my humble belief that there is no such thing as a "true" religion. Every religion, no matter which one it is, is right in some things and wrong in others. However, just because I believe that religion is a crock, that does not mean that I do not accept the very real possibility of a Supreme Being, whatever He, She or It is. Oh yeah, I do not believe that God is a Jewish male, or an Arab male, either. God is so far above us that gender is meaningless. Any similarity between God and the crap that religion wants us to believe is purely coincidental.

Hello there!
I too am an agnostic. I don't believe in what the church says because none of it makes sense. The only thing that is keeping me from being completely atheist is because I acknowledge the possibility of some sort of higher being. I believe that said being, if it exists, only created the universe, and has nothing to do with earth. If we do not acknowledge that there IS the slightest possibility that there might be a god, then we are no better than the overly religious people. I don't think that it is in your blood, I think that it is more likely that you are like me.

You bring up a good idea about still hanging onto the religion and also the human nature point. I really don't know what I believe in. I think it is possible that there is a higher power, but it is certainly not the one described by religions....they are terrifying. I would like to think that we will have an opportunity to continue learning after we die, which is why I sometimes believe there is a God.

When the term "non-believer" is used, it generally means anything that we don't agree with whether it be religion and/or god.
There's nothing wrong with still believing in a god; It's just the way you think. I was raised baptist and after looking into my own religion there were many things I disagreeed with. I tend to flow with my logical side which says there is no god because there is no scientific proof. Like you I tend to lean back into my old ways and that might be from my "brainwashing" But not too often. Humans tend to cling on to the past but only brieflly.

Well, i went threw the same thing you did. My parents made me get comfermed and i didnt want to. The only reason i did was so i could get a cell phone. But now that i dont have to go to church anymore im so happy. I just dont belive in anything that christians do. And i think the reason you still believe in god, is becuase of all the brain washing, and i completly agree with you about the human nature to need somthing to worship. And what you believe in isnt in your blood, its your own thoughts. So dont think that just becuase your ancestors believed in a god, means that you have to. Take some time to think it over to your self and think about what makes since to you. Do you really think that there is a God that created everything?

People who are raised isolated from religious influences have NO religious beliefs. Feral children that have been discovered and taught to speak have NO religious beliefs.
Humans are born atheists, and they learn about gods and religions from other humans. Societal pressure compel you to conform to the beliefs of others in your community. You believe what you're taught. The African pagans who were brought to American as slaves had no innate sense of Jesus Christ, but after a few generations, most had become Christians. Religion is pervasive, but it's not instinctual.

I think you're over thinking this. People are religious because it's comforting, it give them room to grow, and it gives them something to gather around.
We all came from Animists, Sun worshipers and Ancestor worshipers. Whether it was an evolution of beliefs, people trying to find God, or blasphemers denying God, we still can benefit from faith.

You are an agnostic because you still fear the afterlife and what will happen after your death. You fear that if you lose all "touch" with the religion you were raised on, then you may go to hell when you die. Many people are like that. Many christians go to church and play the life of a christian, when they really don't believe a word of it. They just go out of fear.....or to be on the safe side.

Congratulations on using your own logic and senses to creating your own view of the world instead of blindly accepting someone else's. This is a huge accomplishment that many people are incapable of.
Humans needed religion and Gods to explain things they couldn't explain otherwise.
What's that yellow ball? -Sun God
That loud noise? -Thunder God
That earthquake? -Earth God, etc...
Now that we have explanations for these events and more, religion is becoming more and more outdated. It mostly sticks around because people are initially programmed to never question their beliefs and they spread that programming to their own children like a herpes of ignorance on society's upperlip.
