If you are considering a Toyota you HAVE to read this: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/10/toyota_quality.html
Toyotas arent perfect, and the new ones have especially fell below expectation. There are quite a few similar, and better alternatives. I would have to say the GMC Acaidia is the best, If you have not seen one, you have to. They are extremely refined unlike past GM's, and has one of the nicest interiors ever on an SUV. Dont believe me? http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpcontainers/do/MediaNav/modelId=100507140/firstNav=Gallery EDmunds also has great professional and consumer reviews, in which the Acadia outscores the 4Runner. The Acadia also has a longer warranty, at 100,000 miles instead of Toyotas 36,000 mile. The Acadia offers much more for the money, and is a crossover so it gets much better fuel economy than a traditional SUV. The Honda Pilot, Nissan Xterra, and the Acadias twins, the Saturn Outlook and Buick Enclave are also REALLY nice alternatives to a 4Runner. GM has put their money where their mouth is, and its time to give them another try as they've shut the critics up.

You definitely can't go wrong with a 4 Runner. They are extremely nice. You could get a base V6 powered 4 Runner that's simple and easy to use, or a V8 powered one with luxuries like the navigation system and DVD player. My friend has a 1993 4 Runner with like 185,000 miles on it and it keeps running strong, even though its old. He took it off-roading and it did fine. So if you wants something that's comfortable on the road and can be just as comfortable off-road, get the 4 Runner, you won't regret it.

if you get an older 4runner with a 3vze 6 cyl motor, check that it has been through the recalls. these motors tend to blow head gaskets and oil pumps (personal experience). if you get a 4 runner with the removable top (pre 1989), it will more than likely have a 22re 4 cyl engine, which are great engines. i have no knowledge of 1996 and later 4runners other than i prefer the older ones

I've been driving my 4Runner (2003 V8) for a few years. I bought it new. I love it. It's easy to handle, comfortable. I've never had even one problem with it. But the only draw back is the gas mileage. It gets about 14 mpg. So I'm going to size down just a bit. Mine will be for sale in about two weeks. I'm going to get another Toyota though. You can't beat them.

The 4Runner has wonderful reputation and is very rugged. Whether you drive it for daily commute or weekend get away, it will take you to places of your choice. Check it out at local Toyota dealerships.

Toyota designs and builds excellent vehicles.
The 4 Runner is very well-engineered and has a fine reputation for reliability.
Its biggest shortcoming is gas mileage--expect it to be only in the 'teens.

The only con I can think of is the price...other than that, it is a quality vehicle, as are all Toyota vehicles!

I work at a Toyota Lexus dealership we have allot of them in for CV joints, transfer case, rear end problems they also have a few recalls on them. once they get past basic warranty they are expensive to keep maintenance up on.

Great vehicle. I've got over 300,000 miles on mine and it works and runs great!
Only faults I have found in my older model is low power and top heavy. I believe both have been corrected.
