call canon or consider upgrading to xp or vista where there is better usb support. xp has software that will transfer the images for you, vista has software that will do that and allow you to edit and enhance the images as well. 98, ME and 2000 do not have either; you have to totally rely on the vendor's software to both transfer and edit the images. you also have to rely on the vendor to provide drivers to facilitate communication between the camera and the pc. the only software those old OS had was Imaging, and that was designed for scanners, so it only transfer one image at a time.

you can also use a card reader with your digital cameras, which is quicker and easier than relying on USB.

One easy way out is not to use the supplied cable but use an alternative method of downloading the pics. One way is to remove the memory card from the camera and plug it into a USB card reader. Hope you know what that is. Its a device that can read memory cards bascially. Windows 98 will detect it automatically if not go to "my computer" and open up the folder. Having done that you might want to download a free program Picasa2 to manage all your digital pics. Check it out, it has receive many excellent reviews. http://www.geocities.com/lcming/Digitalphotography
