If you want one, can afford to purchase from a reputable breeder, and can afford all of the proper care and health costs than go right ahead.

I would say yes but there are a lot of things to consider:
Negatives:
They are prone to eye problems
They snort a lot
They pass gas a lot
They shed a lot
They are harder to potty train (patience cause it can be done!)
They are expensive
Positives:
Snorting is cute to many
They are like little funny children
They are small
They are always happy/loving
They are people dogs and get along well with children and other dogs
I would also recommend that you buy your pug from a breeder. You can find a list of good breeders on the Pug Dog Club of America website. Expect to spend about $1000 for a well-bred pug. With buying your dog from a good breeder you will have a healthier dog and better looking dog. And whatever you do, DO NOT buy your dog from a pet store (those dogs are from puppy mills). Good luck with your decision! :)

Well, that depends on the time you are willing to spend with your pet. Since you are already considering a breed, I assume that you have already decided that a dog is right for you. Remember that Pugs are notorious for eye problems, heart problems and especially breathing problems (due to their body type). A good breeder should have healthy dogs and proof of negative genetic diseases. Above all - Do not buy from a pet store! Most pet stores sell dogs from puppy mills. These are run by unlicensed, unqualified people whose only goal is to make a buck - or several hundred! A great place to get a dog is your local pound. Many pounds either work with breed rescue groups or will notify you if they get a specific breed in. Then you can save a life and still get what you want. Hope this helps!

Everyone always talks about how cute dogs are and that's why you should get one.
I have two pugs. Pugs are extremely expensive when it comes to maintenance and their health.
Because they are a pure breed (true with all pure breeds) they are prone to a lot of medical problems: ear and eye infections, hip and knee problems, collapsed tracheas, mites, diabetes (all of these are hereditary and not covered by pet insurance).
One of my pugs already has had a hip surgery ($2200) and eye surgery ($600). She also had cancer which was around $800 to remove. She needs knee surgery ($2000). Monthly they need their anal glands cleaned ($30/pug) otherwise they rub their butt on the floor and it stinks. She also had mites and that cost over $3000 to take care of.
Both, have major food allergies - they need special food from the vet.
They're inside dogs. They're very sensitive to heat and very sensitive to cold.
They are very smart though. We trained ours to go potty in the litterbox.
Not all pugs have these issues, but they could. All the problems I've listed (with the exception of the cancer) are hereditary in pugs. I hope you look at all these before you purchase one. If you can't afford their medical care, please don't get one.
Also, if you do decide to buy a pug, if you buy it from a breeder, ask to see the parents. If they refuse, run, don't just walk away.
At the same time, they're fun, affectionate, extremely smart and funny and very stubborn. They learn very quickly (behaviour, not tricks), they learned certain words like walk, run, treat, etc. They LOVE to go on walks. They're fantastic with kids.
