I've wondered that myself for a long time. I would think that if there was a "God", and he loves us as much as he says He does, and He can do whatever He wants, why not just say "l love you and I want to forgive you your sins, so I will." What's with the torture and execution? Also...what on earth kinds of sins does the average person do that's SO bad it would take THAT level of drama to forgive? ("I'm going to torture and execute my son/myself because you played 'I'll show you mine if you show me yours' with your neighbor...") ??? Come on...

1st of all Jesus did not kill Himself. He is both Man and God.(Since u r an atheist and seem to "know so much" about Catholicism, dont u even know that suicide is a mortal sin?U r only contradicting yourself) Honestly, only an ultimate sacrifice can restore God and Man's relationship. Please picture yourself. If you were the Supreme infinite being that was God isnt it a very great sacrifice to, in the first place put yourself at the low level of Man? Jesus as Man, was also very afraid to die Himself and the toll of (as God) being all knowing and thus knowing all of man's sins ever done and created in the past present and future stressed Him so much he wept and cried, sweat blood. He also knew He would be spat at, mocked by people, put down, embarrassed, stripped of his clothing, tortured, the pain of all sins, the fact that even if He opened Heaven's Gates, many people would stillchoose to go to Hell on their free will, etc. To bear and know every sin Man created will obviously put so much on you and He "hoped" it wouldnt happen but only a sacrifice of Great magnitude and extraordinary humility could openHeaven. He knew he was going to be betrayed. But to die for a lowerclass of objects just shows pure love for mankind right?I mean would you die and suffer so much to save a group of ordinaryearthworms? No way! But if you truly loved something youd give upanything at any cost no matter how great just for it. Just goes to show you how much Jesus loved everyone.Thisis why the sacrifice was so great.

Gpd has always been able to forgive us. He started with Adam and Eve. In Old Testament times, blood sacrifices were offered to atone for sins.
Any thing we do that is not in line with what God allows, is sin. Sin causes death.
Christ chose to die for us and pay that debt once and for everybody. All sin is paid for, we just have to believe Christ is who He says He is and turn away from a life of intentional, habitual sin. Accept the gift.

Lent is period of fasting and repentance traditionally observed by Catholics and some Protestant denominations in preparation for Easter. The length of the Lenten fast, was established in the 4th century as 40 days. During this time, participants eat sparingly, or simply give up a particular food or habit. Ash Wednesday and Lent began as a way for Catholics to remind themselves to repent of their sins in a similar manner to how people in the Old Testament repented in sackcloth, ashes, and fasting (Esther 4:1-3; Jeremiah 6:26; Daniel 9:3; Matthew 11:21).
However, over the centuries it has developed a much more "sacramental" value. Many Catholics understand giving something up for Lent as a way to gain blessing from God. The Bible does not teach that such acts have any merit with God (Isaiah 64:6). In fact, the New Testament teaches us that our acts of fasting and repentance should be done in a manner that does not attract attention to ourselves: “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6:16-18).
Fasting is a good thing when it is done with a Biblical perspective. It is good and pleasing to God when we give up sinful habits and practices. There is absolutely nothing wrong with setting aside a time where we focus on Jesus' death and resurrection. However, these "practices" are things we should be doing every day of the year, not just for 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter. If you feel led of the Lord to observe Lent, you are free to do so. Be sure to focus on the time as you repenting from your sins and consecrating yourself to God - not on trying to earn God's favor or increase His love for you!

he was showing he loved us by making the ultimate sacrifice. Jesus and God are the same inspirit-whereas Jesus had a physical body and feelings, temptations just like all humans, god is not tempted, and does not have the capability of sinning. Hey, I would kill myself if everyone that claimed to love me lied to me and hurt me, too.

According to the law of God, the price of sin is death. As adam and eve did sin and disobeyed God, their children (us) were born in sin just like a baby born with HIV from his parents. But the God loves us,that is every men and women and our Holy Father didnt want us to go to Hell because we were not the culprit He sacrified His own Son for our sins. Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins.

Early religions needed followers.
There were many savior cults before "jesus" that were popular..and Christianity is just one more of them.
The easiest way to get followers is not to tell people "You are wrong" but instead tell them,
"You are part-right, but you don't have the whole truth."
So they incorporated parts of other religions into theirs to make it more attractive to the locals.... and those little things stuck, and accumulated over hundreds of years.
Jesus is a fairytale, god is a fairytale, there is no forgiveness, no heaven, no hell, no afterlife of ANY KIND..
To believe otherwise is to believe a PIPE DREAM.

Jesus was the son of God not God. He did not kill himself. He died on the cross to save us from sin. If you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior you will be saved.

Jesus is God's Son, not God. John 10:36 God did not come to earth; he sent his Son. John 3:16, 17.

Jesus died to wipe out the inevitibility of sin for those who are saved, to allow the Holy Spirit to come (so we could know God personally), and to set the standard for faith.
it makes plenty of sense
