Usually a child of 12 to 13 years of age has a bar or bat mitzvah on shabbat (which is from friday night to saturday night).

after the 13 years, any day, any age, its better on shabbat so all the community can share the joy, and itys no good, during fast days, or on sad days like kipur, or tisha veab.
