as a painter i deal with this problem all the time using a flexible putty knife drag it across the problem area (with the "mud") very light coat this is called skim coating it will almost be as if you didnt put any on at all putting too thick of coat on wiil cause the pinholes and will also make more work for you sanding to eliminate this when you start skim until you get a finished product also if the mud seems to thick it is ok to add water to it. also damp sponges are usually Not the way to go to get a perfect finish.

use light compound for finishing its in a blue or green printed bucket sand down,, and wet the tools, and then use lighter mix on those bad spots,, it says light joint compound on it then just wet your wide blade knife to get the compound to spread easy, and then dry and refill again to build this up evenly,, now check for sanding ,,then buy the cheap PVA primer for drywall then after it drys use a good latex paint twice

Air bubbles, might not have been fully dry. Just lightly skim it again and either lightly sand or take a damp sponge to it. good luck and any GOOD taper uses nothing but a sponge cause when were done there's nothing to sand

Did you forget to apply Sheetrock tape first? If not then try a different compound and make sure it is mixed thoroughly.

Did you wet sponge it after you sanded? If not, then that could be the reason.

Sounds like the humidity was too high when you did this.
