If you double the percentage of the alcohol content you get the proof number. Both Jose Cuervo Especial and Black Medallion are 40% ABV so they are both 80 proof!

For tequila to be legally sold in the US, it must be 80 proof.

There is a similar drink called mescal that does not have as strict guideline.
