The first case of AIDS was reported in 1981, but the disease may have existed unrecognized for many years before that. HIV infection leading to AIDS has been a major cause of illness and death among children, teens, and young adults worldwide. AIDS has been the sixth leading cause of death in the United States among 15- to 24-year-olds since 1991

Although the AIDS epidemic sprung unannounced upon the world in the early eighties, the oldest verified case dates back to 1959 in Zaire. A blood sample of an anonymous man was discovered in the archives of a Zairian (which was then called Congo) STD clinic in Kinshasa and analyzed in 1998 to establish this record. There is even one case dating back to 1934 that is suspected, but not verified for lack of tissue and/or blood samples.

Scientists isolate what is believed to be the earliest known case of AIDS. The discovery suggests that the multitude of global AIDS viruses all shared a common African ancestor within the past 40 to 50 years. that was in 1959

AIDS started in the 1950s and was known as "Slim Disease" in Africa. The first recorded case in the modern world was in the 1980s with a male flight attendant from Canada.

Also, although AIDS was first recognized in 1950 in a man from Congo, it wasn't until years later that it was really recognized as AIDS. People in Africa simply would die from the Slim Disease. It was based in both men and women, but most believed it was limited to prostitutes and truck drivers.

I remember hearing stories about a man who was being referred to in the story I heard as Patient 0. Supposedly during the late 70's the man circulated himself through bath houses in San Francisco and after having sex with as many individuals as possible, he would tell them, "now you've got it too." I don't know if there is any truth to that.

Here is a link to a website that mentions a number of theories of the origin of HIV, and also information about 3 individuals whose tissue was found to contain HIV (postmortem) well before the late 70s.

AIDS first appeared in 1981. People were going to the government telling them that many young men had came down with rare kinds of cancer, pneumonia and other sicknesses. They were all dying and no one knew why. Researchers found out that they were dying because their bodies couldn’t fight off germs. They could tell that something was weakening their immune system and that the disease was spreading. The disease was given the name Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). All that doctors knew was that people who got the disease always died.

I know in the US it was 1981 with a flight attendant from Haiti to San Francisco. I believe it was a male and thats where everyone began to think it was a gay thing.

But in Africa it was already ocurring, not too sure for how long before it hit the US though.
