He has to have a drink in his hand all day long or he panics, is this a serious condition or just a phase?

I'm a mom of a 5-year-old diabetic, and yes this is one of the signs of juvenile diabetes. Your son is probably fine, but it's a good idea to take him to the doctor and get his urine checked for sugar. If they find sugar, they will do a finger prick test. I want to warn you of some emergency signs, though, just in case. If he begins to vomit and/or become lathargic, take him to an emergency room. These are signs of DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis), which is a diabetic coma and is extremely serious. My son fell into this and this is how we found out he had juvenile diabetes.

I only tell you this so you are well-informed. I often think my younger (3 year old) is showing signs, I check his sugar and he is normal. So, I hope you don't get too worried. Just go to the doctor's - better safe than sorry. Good luck to you and your sweet boy. You can e-mail me if you have additional questions :)

It wouldn't hurt to get him checked out, a finger prick blood test should be enough, call your pediatrician.
But my friend's daughter is like that, she drinks a ridiculous amount of juice and water all day long. She said her older daughter did the same thing but started growing out of it at the age of 5. The panic thing might be a form of anxiety, his drink may be his comfort item, like how some kids have to carry a blanket or stuffed animal.

if you think about how often he had a bottle every day when he was a baby and the transition from bottle to sippy cup it actually is part habit part thirsty. put water in what he is drinking out of so he is not filling up on too much juice or milk or whatever he drinks. sometimes beverages don't actually quench your thirst so you always want more,so give him as much water that he wants, squirt a little lemon in it sometimes. if he is really thirsty, eventually it will get quenched and he won't need it as much.

It can be an early sign of diabetes. You need to mention it to your doctor.
