Five by five is a radio communications expression that means "loud and clear." The first number five represents the S units of reception strength (which could be read from a meter). The second five is a rating of the signal clarity (which was subjective).
I believe that Ham radio operators were the first to use this, but it was picked up by the military and even the F.C.C. as the amateurs became "professionals."
"Five by five" is a strong, clear signal.

Being overseas it is actually very difficult to get a job. you are competing against each other and locals for the positions so sometimes you are at home because of that. They can also be doing online colleges or working from home. When overseas I couldn't get a job and either could several friends, several of which are nurses, have BAs in all sorts of areas because it was so difficult. There is some that don't say they are married to the military. They have their own degrees, own jobs, and so forth. They keep their lives entirely separate and don't push what their spouse does or wear his rank. There are some wives though that are just in it for the benefits, and do sit around doing nothing but gossiping while using his Rank as their own. You get that though in any position out there. I have seen it in the civilian world as well, so it isn't just the military. To be honest the one bumper sticker I hate is "**** Wife, the toughest job in the *****" because you aren't in the military. Yes it is hard but there are other jobs out there where the spouse is gone just as much, in just as much danger and the pay stinks too. My dad was gone all the time growing up because of his job. My mom never said she had the toughest job. She just did it, raised us 4 on her own until finally he was home more as he got more Senior.

5 by 5, is a term given to describe the recieving end of a radio transmission. On a scale from 1 to 5, 1 being poor and 5 being excellant. Also the same scale being used on signal strength meters. So if you have a 5 by 5 transmission. What you essentially have is an excellant and very strong signal. "Rodger Dodger, your 5 by 5, wall to wall and tree top tall with the Hammer down"
