It's just a child who comes home from school to an empty house because both parents are working. The term became popular in the 80s and 90s because so many women began working outside the home. It can be associated with "problem children," but doesn't necessarily mean a child will have discipline problems.

A latch key kid is a kid who comes home to an empty house - lets themselves in with the key & is alone until the parents come home from work.

I was a latch key kid & was not at all troublesome. My mom left us a list of chores & we did them before she got home from work at 5.

This term is used when you have a child who goes home to an empty house because the parent or parents are working has to use their own key to enter the home. The child or children are not troublesome, just alone!

No term means the child comes home to an empty house because the parents are either working or on holiday.
The child has a key to the family home wears it around its neck or in his bag and comes home to an empty house.
Usually the children have to fend for themselves. Have brekky make lunch go to school and come home.

In some instances that I have heard this happens alot children going to school without the parents send off and coming home to an empty house.

Sometimes the child even has to make the dinner for themselves and the parent if they are single parent.
