Yes, they were called lucifers. "Lucifer" means "light-bearer".

Did you know that the proper name for the acolytes who carry candles in procession, on either side of the "Crucifer" (or, "Cross bearer") are called "light bearers" - or, more properly "Lucifers"??

Nobody calls them that, for obvious reasons.
