My cupboards will be white and my appliances are s.s. The flooring is oak laminate. I was thinking of something shiny & black. Any ideas?

I think black countertops on white cabinets are gorgeous! (Especially with Stainless Steel!) If you can afford the cost of granite...do it! If not, Wilsonart, Formica and Pionite have some incredible Laminates that really emulate Granite...they even have a little texture and the edges can be bullnosed. Sometimes I mix these laminates with granite when a customer needs to match outdoor countertops (Fla) and it's hard to see a difference.

God forbid...stay away from Marble in your kitchen. I have marble in my bar and it's the worst for absorbing anything...even water! Tile is okay, but I don't care how careful you are, the grout alway's ends up looking bad. I've had Corian and it's okay...just okay! Just doesn't have that rich look that natural stone does, and it scratches.

Shiny and Black is good! :) I really don't think dark countertops are harder to look after than lighter counter surfacing. Dust and Crumbs? Countertops are constantly wiped. If it does show more, I'll just put in the extra effort in for the sharp look!

Good luck with your project.

Shiny and black will look stunning--and it will be hard to keep looking nice. Shiny black will show dust and crumbs, as well as water spots and streaks.

However, you could pick a granite or a laminate that has a black pattern (look at Baltic Brown) or look at soapstone (it has a matte black finish).

Slate or marble if you want the natural look: this is a very appealing option and a pretty expensive one. Corian and Wilsonart come in any color, are fully moldable and sandable, very sanitary if kept clean, and are virtually indestructable but lack the feel of real rock or marble.
If you go with tile, make sure to seal the grout.
Formica is probably the least expensive.

black granite would be perfect, the composite countertops are also good,(cambria ,silestone, corian etc) but the look of granite is what cannot be matched ,I ama contractor who works only in luxury homes and 99% havr granite ...everything else is a distant second.

I wouldn't go with a black for the counter tops.... I would do a neutral color that is lighter than the flooring.
