I think school projects can be useful and beneficial for students. First of all, it helps those students who don't do so well on tests bring their grade up with a major project that they can work on over time. Secondly, by completing projects, students have to apply what they have learned and put it to use. This is superior to simple memorization and regurgitation. Finally, because students spend a great deal of time on these projects (well, they should), they are more likely to remember important concepts concerning this project. For example, one of the projects I assign every year is a cell model. I have found that students still remember the roles of the organelles several months later!

Even though I strongly believe in assigning projects, certain rules apply for the teacher. First of all, don't assign too many major projects in a school year. Secondly, give the students plenty of time to complete the project. I like to give my students at least 3-4 weeks to complete a major project. Projects must also apply to what is being covered. For example, it is silly to assign a food web project before you have even entered the ecology unit. Finally, special consideration must be taken into account for some students who are financially burdened or don't have transportation to go out and buy project materials. I usually keep some old projects and break them down into "spare parts" for future students who may need this resource.

Overall, projects are extremely important and help students develop time-management skills. They address multiple learning styles and give the students opportunities to apply their knowledge. There is one thing I hate about projects, however. That is when it is obvious that a student's parents have done the project for them!

As a student I hated them and was never any good at them. Give me a research paper any day.

Most students have learning styles that are different than mine, so they might best learn via project.
