I claim my mother as a dependent, she has no income and does not yet receive social security. I do not live with her, but every month I give her an alloted amount of money to pay for Mortgage, untilities, food and other misc things. I do pay for over 50% of her household fee's but i give her cash and she writes the checks (the untilities are in her name). Does this qualify me as HOH? Will a written afadavit from my mother stating that I pay for the household fee's suffice as proof?

I give her cash each month as it it easier for her to pay for food, groceries and such and she deposits the rest to pay bills. That is why I am wondering if an affadavit from her stating that i support her is proof enough.

Yes, parents are the only dependents that qualify you for head of household filing status without living with you.

I assume you are giving her a check, not cash, each month for your support of her - your cancelled checks would serve as proof if you are questioned or audited.

You cannot legally claim HOH without the person you are "head of" living in the same home. They have to reside with you for at least half of the year. You can only claim her as a dependent. There is a self-test you can take to determine this. Type in the key words "head of household" on any search engine.

Assuming youre not married, it sounds as if you can file HOH and claim your mother as a dependent since she is a "qualified relative." You dont have to live with her, but as long as you provide more than 50% of her support and she did not earn over $3,300 income she is eligible.

Sorry, only your child will qualify you for head of household.
