This is what it is. Whe have to pick a topic and then debate on it and one person has to be for it and another has to be aginst it and we have to say why we are for it or aginst it and we have to have info from three different web sites.

Against the draft, the one thing that makes our military so great is the fact that everyone that has joined did so without being forced to. We all want to be there and did not have to worry about the guy that got drafted watching your back because all he could think about was how to get kick out so he could go home.

not saying all people that got draft in the pass were this way some stayed in 20+ year and were great leaders and soldiers

but in the end if you want to join then you will do a better job then someone who was forced to join.

In the days of the draft, the draftees had two year commitments. It took a year to train them Stateside and after a year (15 months for Marines) in Vietnam, your average guy was just beginning to learn enough to be competent and more good than harm in combat. Then it was time for them to go home. (Marines weren't drafted, but a lot of guys chose a 3-year Marine commitment to avoid being drafted into the Army.) It has been said that we didn't fight a nine-year war in Vietnam, we fought a one-year war nine times. And the technology hasn't become less during the thirty years since. That is the main reason the military don't want a draft. A volunteer professional force is much more effective.

For it-Our military is stretched out in Iraq and Afghanistan and we would be hard pressed to respond to another conflict if one were to come up any time soon. What would happen if North Korea and South Korea starting going at it tomorrow? Or Iran and Israel? We would be in big trouble.

Against it-we won't need one unless something drastic and unlikely happens. The military is better off as an all volunteer service and having people who don't wanna be there will only hurt our overall performance.

The draft was a tool that helped save this country from being over run by the Germans and Japanese during WW2. It was needed to insure that America had the manpower to fight wars in the Far East and in the Europe. Without the draft, we surely would have lost on each. Any young man over 18 was subject to the draft and if he was fit, he was sent off to basic training and then on to his unit. I beleive that we need the draft today. Look at what we are doing, we are taking people from the National Guard and sending them to Iraq. Remember the words National Guard. They were set up to act as security for our nation, not be sent off over seas. Also, I am a beleiver that young people should earn thier stripes so to speak and be requied to serve.

You are lucky. There are so many reasons to be against it. This administration hates it, the military hates it and does not need it, Most Americans hate it. So this should be an easy debate to win. I would avoid the radical reasoning in your arguments. You will lose if you take the hippy route.
