Ruffian. Her only defeat was a match race on July 6, 1975, at Belmont Park to that year's Kentucky Derby winner, Foolish Pleasure. Billed as the "equine battle of the sexes", Ruffian broke down after a little more than 3 furlongs into the race, and was put down the next day.

Ruffian. Barbaro didn't live long enough to race that much. He only had raced 5 races before the Derby, then he won that... The Preakness was his 7th race where he broke his leg which eventually caused his death. Barbaro's wins were: his maiden at Deleware Park on Oct 4, 2005, the Laurel Futurity on Nov 19, 2005, Tropical Park Derby on January 1, 2006, The Holy Bull on Feb 4, 2006, the Florida Derby on April 1, 2006, and The Kentucky Derby on May 6, 2006. And he wasn't put down immediately after the race... he lived 8 more months.
Ruffian raced 11 times, breaking down half way into the 11th. Ruffian's race record was:
Her maiden on May 22, 1974
June 12: Fashion Stakes - Won (Equalled Track Record)
July 10: Astoria Stakes - Won (Equalled Track Record)
July 27: Sorority Stakes - Won (New Stakes Record)
August 23: Spinaway Stakes - Won (New Stakes Record)
April 14, 1975: $20000 Allowance
April 30: Comely Stakes - Won (New Stakes Record)
May 10: Acorn Stakes - Won (New Stakes Record)
May 31: Mother Goose Stakes - Won (New Stakes Record)
June 21: Coaching Club American Oaks - Won (Equalled Stakes Record)
July 6: The Great Match against Foolish Pleasure, the winner of the Kentucky Derby that year
She was also the greatest filly to ever set foot on the track... she tied or beat a record every time she ran. And she was beautiful: http://www.jockeysite.com/stories/ruffian1.jpg
She's my favorite... can you tell? ;o)

Ruffian, one of the most brilliant fillies that ever raced...injured both sesamoids in her right front leg after about a half mile during a match race with that years Derby winner Foolish Pleasure, she was operated on woke up 12 hours later thrashing and injured her leg even worse then put down...unfortunate but it appears it might have been in her blood as her sire Reviewer had broken down 3 times

Only the greatest horse of the 20th Century, the great Ruffian. As quoted from Lucien Lauren, who saw Ruffian run as a 2 year old, "By God, she may even be better than Secretariat." A great lady who NEVER lost (I don't count the Match Race as a loss, except for her life), who was NEVER behind at ANY point of call and NEVER headed. She rests in peace in the infield with her nose pointing to the finish line at Belmont.

That would be Ruffian, a filly in the eighties. She won each of her first ten races and also broke or equaled the race record. Her eleventh race was match race with Foolish Pleasure, the winner of that year's Kentucky Derby. She was injured in the race and put down shortly afterwards.

Barbaro had 6 wins before his injury. Ruffian had 10 wins before her injury before breaking down in her 11th race.
