My beautiful girl is almost 10 years old. Aside from hip dysplasia, she has no known health problems. She doesn't appear to be sick, but off and on lately, she's had loose stools that are coated in a VERY THICK slime. There has been no change in diet, and we only feed her dog food...NO people treats.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

It could just be irritation in the bowels which could be caused by eating something she found or worms or for no APPARENT reason However, since none of us can see your dog, I recommend a check-up. If she is having frequent loose stools, have a TLI run for Exocrine Pancreatic Insuffiency (EPI). More information on the link below. If that test is done, have a test run for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) at the same time as the two often go hand in hand. Information on the second link.

In an older dog I would suspect some kind of intestinal infection going on.
Worms can do this too but in an older dog my first thoughts are an infection.
Please get a stool sample to the vets and have her checked out.

This could possiably be a digestive trac problem or intestent problem . Her being the age she is she is acceptable to catching things quicker or more easily than a younger dog would . I would defintly take her to the vets and a sample of her stool . I know that sounds gross but it will help the vet diagnose her better , good luck to your furry friend . take care

What you call slime is mucus and is an indicator of stomach and bowel issues. Most parasites cause this problem but other things can cause it. Bring a stool sample to the vet and they should be able to tell you.

Good luck

At that age, it could be a lot of different things. The best thing to do is bring her to the vet and bring a stool sample with you.

Almost certainly this is caused by intestinal worms
