Why can't we (who might have already got a lot of things & presents) ask more often for money to donate to poorer people e.g. homeless children or orphans in Kiew or other places. Look around to find a trustable orginasation in your area. You can perhaps find one that will collect shoeboxes you can fill yourself with toy pets, toys, sweets, new clothes, scarf, gloves, hat, shoes, creative&artistic material, material for school, pencils, hygenic things, jewelery, a cushion - things bought from the "birthday-money" of your friends. You can add actually anything you can think of that a child might like (A CHILD THAT MIGHT HAVE NEVER EVER GOT A PRESENT BEFORE IN HIS OR HER LIFE!?!?) and that fits with other little things in a shoebox. So you & your friends can be happy to have made one or more children happy that other people think of them when they're so lonesome....Think about it-it's a wonderful feeling&worth the effort! And have fun packing these shoeboxes,you can easily get addicted.

A couple of generations ago, people did NOT ask for Birthday presents, they would get a gift, if they were lucky, and it was a surprise, something simple, a handkerchief or some sweets.
These days it seems there is no shame, our kids look on it as a shopping day, and give a LIST of stuff they WANT, not just might like.
But yes I hear what you are saying, it would be a nice world if we could all take your attitude that's for sure. Lets all give a bit of thought.

charity begins at home my mom and dad didnt have a lot of money so i want better for my kids the goverments of poorer countrys (hang on they woulnt be poor if the goverments supported there poeple like most western states do) spend there money selfishley if that is spelt wrong i dont give a sh+t if they sorted out their own countrys first they woulnd be poor poverty could be stopped birth controle 4 one if you cant afford to live why have a kid i am a catholic i believe if you cannot support a child you should not have one

Don't know...it's a great idea. I never ask for presents - in fact I ask people not to get me anything. I'm not selfless, I just hate writing bloody thank you letters, and I think the money's better spent on my daughter's nest-egg. But I like your idea.

I asked Oxfam what is in the future of the people they help, is it anything but consumersim like ours? They didn't reply.
When you've helped them, do you get to see the progress?

There is no rule that you can't give away anything you want after it has been given to you as a gift. Once a gift is given it is yours to do with as you please including giving it away to another.
