how do you keep it from drying too much, and how do you dye it?

Make sure you rinse the dye out well when you're done doing it and use the conditioner they give you with the dye. After that make sure you condition your hair after you wash it, also you should use a deep conditioner regularly to keep the color.

Before you dye it read ALL the directions that come with the color, they basically explain everything with you. You should have someone help you with the roots. After you mix the color then you start with the roots then saturate the rest of your hair, the roots should be one for 20 minutes and the rest should be ten, 30 minutes all together, follow the times they give you if different.

For me, these things:
1-use a gentle shampoo without sodium lauryl sulfate (sodium laureth sulfate is OK). It does not have to say 'color safe', some 'color safe' shampoos really aren't.
2-condition well
3-don't use a hot dryer or other heat appliances. I keep my dryer on the warm setting, and do it as little as I can get away with. Hot drying is murder on my color.
4-if I sit out in the sun, like at the beach, I wear a hat. I love the sun, but a day in the sun fades my hair wicked.

It's not easy keeping your color 'nice', it's a lot of upkeep, so if you don't have to color, don't. I have grey, so I need to color, but I'd give anything to have my natural color back.

Even if you get it done at a salon, it will still fade. If your going to do it at home, try changing it a subtle, color, if you try something to crazy it will turn bad. If the salon makes the mistake, it should be no charge to you, to get it repaired. They are the professional, they should know what they are doing. Good Luck
