They should be protecting the United States in whatever way they are called upon to protect her, which is exactly what they signed up to do.

But, since your question focuses on natural disasters, and especially Hurricane Katrina, I would like to share this with you and everybody else. It was written by the (black) Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, founder and president of BOND, the Brotherhood Organization of A New Destiny, and author of "Scam: How the Black Leadership Exploits Black America."

What he wrote, below, must be one of the most eloquent and truthfully written pieces of journalism to pour forth from anyone in the last few decades. Please notice that the Reverend Peterson says not one word about the use of our armed forces:

-Moral poverty cost blacks in New Orleans
-1:00 a.m. Eastern

Say a hurricane is about to destroy the city you live in. Two questions:

What would you do?

What would you do if you were black?

Sadly, the two questions don't have the same answer.

To the first: Most of us would take our families out of that city quickly to protect them from danger. Then, able-bodied men would return to help others in need, as wives and others cared for children, elderly, infirm and the like.

For better or worse, Hurricane Katrina has told us the answer to the second question. If you're black and a hurricane is about to destroy your city, you'll probably wait for the government to save you.

This was not always the case. Prior to 40 years ago, such a pathetic performance by the black community in a time of crisis would have been inconceivable. The first response would have come from black men. They would take care of their families, bring them to safety, and then help the rest of the community. Then local government would come in.

No longer. When 75 percent of New Orleans residents had left the city, it was primarily immoral, welfare-pampered blacks that stayed behind and waited for the government to bail them out. This, as we know, did not turn out good results.

Enter Jesse Jackson and Louis Farrakhan. Jackson and Farrakhan laid blame on "racist" President Bush. Farrakhan actually proposed the idea that the government blew up a levee so as to kill blacks and save whites. The two demanded massive governmental spending to rebuild New Orleans, above and beyond the federal government's proposed $60 billion. Not only that, these two were positioning themselves as the gatekeepers to supervise the dispersion of funds. Perfect: Two of the most dishonest elite blacks in America , "overseeing" billions of dollars. I wonder where that money will end up.

Of course, if these two were really serious about laying blame on government, they should blame the local one. Responsibility to perform legally and practically fell first on the mayor of New Orleans . We are now all familiar with Mayor Ray Nagin the black who likes to yell at President Bush for failing to do Nagin's job. The facts, unfortunately, do not support Nagin's wailing. As the Washington Times puts it, "recent reports show [Nagin] failed to follow through on his own city's emergency-response plan, which acknowledged that thousands of the city's poorest residents would have no way to evacuate the city."

One wonders how there was "no way" for these people to evacuate the city. We have photographic evidence telling us otherwise. You've probably seen it by now the photo showing 2,000 parked school buses, unused and underwater. How much planning does it require to put people on a bus and leave town, Mayor Nagin? (ed. the buses weren't under water until well after the storm went through)

Instead of doing the obvious, Mayor Nagin (with no positive contribution from Gov. Kathleen Blanco, the other major leader vested with responsibility to address the hurricane disaster) loaded remaining New Orleans residents into the Superdome and the city's convention center. We know how that plan turned out.

About five years ago, in a debate before the National Association of Black Journalists, I stated that if whites were to just leave the United States and let blacks run the country, they would turn America into a ghetto within 10 years. The audience, shall we say, disagreed with me strongly. Now I have to disagree with me. I gave blacks too much credit. It took a mere three days for blacks to turn the Superdome and the convention center into ghettos, rampant with theft, rape and murder.

President Bush is not to blame for the rampant immorality of blacks. Had New Orleans ' black community taken action, most would have been out of harm's way. But most were too lazy, immoral and trifling to do anything productive for themselves.

All Americans must tell blacks this truth. It was blacks' moral poverty not their material poverty that cost them dearly in New Orleans . Farrakhan, Jackson, and other race hustlers are to be repudiated for they will only perpetuate this problem by stirring up hatred and applauding moral corruption. New Orleans , to the extent it is to be rebuilt, should be remade into a dependency-free, morally strong city where corruption is opposed and success is applauded. Blacks are obligated to help themselves and not depend on the government to care for them. We are all obligated to tell them so.

The Armed Forces of our Nation are protecting us. Overseas they are protecting us by taking the war to the enemy. (Notice how 9/11 was the last terrorist attack on US soil?)

Back home the US military was the lead agency for the response to hurricane Katrina. And if you are wondering why the Louisiana National guard was unable to respond consider that they had been hit by the same disaster as everybody else. Many National Guardsmen could not be recalled because they had been evacuated. National Guard units that had been sent into New Orleans prior to the hurricane were themselves trapped and in need of rescue.

What happened next? The National Guard from 46 other states and territories responded. The Army responded, the Navy sent helicopters and ships, the Air Force set up field hospitals and ran airports - in addition to flying in virtually all the relief supplies.

Sleep soundly - the US military hopes you never need our help, but will come on a moment's notice if you do.

The United States military is not legally allowed to fight in the US, except for the National Guard. And the National Guard does the things you mentioned. They were there helping during Hurricane Katrina and other things of that nature. And we have law enforcement to protect our streets in the United States.

They did do major efforts in helping with Katrina. The US spend more on Katrina (around 200 billion dollars) than we spent on the war in any one year.

Realistically we can't wait to have only a "defensive" miltary power. We had that attiude before both world wars. The result was when we were finally forced to fight in WWI and WWII it had grown to the point that it required major effort on our parts to win it.

In the modern world threats have to be dealt with in advance. The more chaos in the world the more likely it is to get into the USA as in 9/11. Defense at the borders of the US will just not work.

the us troops do protect the us and help out with natural disasters, that's what the national guard is for,but the regular army fights over seas and where ever else they are needed, if you look at the big picture the war on terror is a global threat so we are doing every on a favor, I am in the army (combat medic)and i would love to be at home right now protecting home country instead I'm a few thousand miles away doing it from long distances.

Sure, it doesn't matter if they are "armed forces" or
"unarmed forces"....we need to protect the U.S. The
National Guard is always alert and brave to step in
whenever and wherever needed. Even those citizens
who took it upon themselves to guard our Mexican
border were great. We should all be a part of protecting
America by keeping our eyes and ears open and reporting
any suspicious activity going on. Homeland Security has
already stopped tons of planned attacks on the U.S. So
we all just need to work together and quit fighting amongst
ourselves. Right?

The National Guard is mainly for Homeland protection...The active Military is for War...Except in an invasion of our shores. In 1968, Memphis Tn, Martin Luther was killed. Riots broke out everywhere. I was stationed at Millington Naval Air Station ( 8 mi away) we were not permitted to go into Memphis, as it was a National Guard and Police problem.

They protect us from our enemies, both foreign and domestic, no matter where they may be. It may be useful to remind you that we disbanded the navy in 1785, and that weakness resulted in immediate attacks from Islamic powers, and Preble's boys were fighting them in the very earliest years of the 19th century. Until World War II the US has had largely an isolationist mindset, so you're in good historical company, but it never seems to work when actually used as policy.

The National Guard usually assists with natural disasters. But, we don't want some military state here either. We don't want the military controlling everything we do because that is what will happen. Best to take the fight else where, if there is to be one.

Oh, is that what you want to know. No, those are State issues. There are also federal departments to assist if requested by the State/s.

US armed forces are for protecting the United States. You missed the parts about 'armed' and 'force'.
