Hi,sid. I agree with beez, and,indeed,.. . all the other answerers. we all use only a small part of our talents and gifts. I think the main point that Edison is making when he says "astounded" is that we don't even realise how talented we are until we MAKE AN EFFORT! AND TRY!
As Whitney Houston sings:
"Give me one Moment in Time when I'm More than I thought I could be!"
This song was played on TV as it showed the exultation of the Olympic winners.
It was really inspirational.
I think this is what people should strive for.
Never belittle your own achievements, and don't let people put you down because of your attempts (even if you fail)
Remember: Edison also said:
Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration!

We all have tremendous capabilities within ourselves but we hardly utilize it . We are either ignorant about it or find ourselves surrounded by the negative criticism of friends and mentors of the society. We must explore it and utilize it ,as all the great and famous people have done. The outcome is going to be a amazing achievement for us. This was true for Thomos Edision himself.

In addition to the above answers, if we did what we were capable of doing just once, and it then became expected. That is indeed scary to a large majority off people.

take it apart. if you really did what you were capable (example is...not everyone does what they CAN do, which also doesn't mean what they should. but..back to the example. Hitler. he thought of somehting he could do, and he did it, doen'st mean it was right, which it wasn't, but it was possible of him.) then, you would be amazed. it could go the other way too...someone could have the smarts to cure cancer, and many other things like that..

people can do amazing and wonderful things if we put in the effort and try, but we don't, so we don't reach our full potential and if we did reach our full potential and lived our lives to its fullest we would be amazed with what we were capable of doing

We are amazing creatures. We are capable of miracles. Humans are designed in the image of God and we are godly.

It means we're under-achievers, that we could do much more because the capacity is within us; we just don't put forth the effort.
