The most coomon mistakje is not rinsing the dye completely out, so some remains in your hair and dries it out and damages it.
Or you can no apply the color evenly, so you'll have spots in your hair that are lighter/darker than the rest.
Leaving it in for too long/ not enough time is also a mistake that can be made at home.
Not mixing the color properly, making it too strong/weak.
Not using the right conditioner afterward so your hair wont break..
Those are a few common mistakes people can make.

Well first you might not be able to reach all of your roots by yourself. Also if yo get the wrong color, or leave it in too long you might end up with a funky color then the pretty one you wanted. You can leave it in way too long and burn your hair, this can make it fall out. I dye my hair at home but I usually have my friend help me so she can do my roots, just follow the directions on the box and you should be fine.

from my experience price has nothing to do with it, make sure you have the time you need, do it, or pay a professional, the main thing that can go wrong is when people try to mix two different colors, if you don't do the recommended strand test, it could be really embarrassing. If you have not done this before, do the strand test

it depends what time you do it, like say you did it 3 months after your perm, then almost everything can go wrong. But other than that, nothing

If you're careful, it should go a-okay. BUT, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER go from blond to brown. Your hair will turn green. I speak from experience.
