it all depends on the size i guess.. well ok i wont lie to ya it hurts like hell. i got on that goes from the bottom of my armpit to my hip bone, and about 5 inches wide, it hurt like hell. be prepared for pain. its going to be there, if you really want it it than it wont hurt so bad, but just try to be as relaxed as possible. it will help take slow deep breaths and that will help you, also see if the artist will put up a picture somewhere for you to concentrate on of some artwork or something too look at to kind of take your mind off of it. just relax and enjoy the ride.the ribs have been the most pain of all of my tattoos thus far. i hope this helps....

its worth the pain and suffering though. tattoos there look badas$! its definatly worth it but with everything good there has to be some bad its doable but a bit of pain will come too. good luck!

Pain varies so much from person to person. Typically the rib cage is very painful but how painful really depends on yourself. Honestly if you don't know what you want and are asking random strangers for their opinion on what you should permenantlly put on your body, your not ready for a tattoo. Just to get a tattoo cause you want one is not a good reason. You should have something in mind that you have to have and get that. I definetly agree about doing something orginal and not the same old star or flower thing that everyone does. I suggest thinking about things that are meaningful to you and taking that idea with you along with maybe a picture or two of something that is meaningful to you to a couple different tattoo shops and speaking to the artist directly. Any good artist will be able to help you take your ideas and come up with something great, orginial and meaningful to you. Also this interacting with the tattoo shop and artist will help you in determining which is the best shop for you. If they are helpful in creating your tatttoo, then typically they are a good artist. If they are cold or not helpful, then you don't want them tattooing you. When it comes to deciding which shops are reputable the best thing it to ask questions and look around the shops. Definetly start out by talking to other people that have tattoos and see where they have got them done. Most people who have tattoos love talking about them and dont mind telling you where they got it done. Granted not everyone is going to be local. If it happens to be local, talk to the person and ask them what they think of the shop and artist since they were already there. Then when your at the shops make sure it looks clean and like a place that you would be comfortable with them sticking you with a needle. I mean I have been to some shops that just by walking in, I could tell I would never let them tattoo me. Then there are other shops that are really clean, neat, welcoming, comforting etc. Also any good shop with good artist should have profolios of each artist, look at their work. Also ask about prices, typically you get what you pay for when it comes to tattoos, meaning if your paying cheap, your going to get a cheap looking tattoo. And at any time you have any feeling against using that shop, that should be enough for you to walk out and go to the next one. Letting someone put a needle in you is a very trusting thing, so you definetly want to make sure that the whole process from creating the tattoo to helping you with the healing process is done to make you comfortable. Any any good shop will be able to do that for you.

Yeah I have a friend who got 3 big stars on her rib cage and she said it really hurt....but you eventually go numb to the feeling so as long as you don't have a really low pain tolerance you should be good. And it looks super sweet there too!

Tattoos hurt in general. But anywhere with a thinner area of skin and tissue vs bone will be more sensitive. That has never stopped me, because if you really want it you're gonna get it anyway.... 5 tats later..... lol

Anytime they are pounding that needle against a bone it will hurt, whether its a rib cage , ankle, elbow and etc.

I just had some work done that stretches from my left upper arm to my left side/ribcage area. It's definitely sensitive but doable. I found it slightly worse than my spine.

yes, anywhere on your body where there is pretty much only skin between the needle and the bone it hurts more than the fatty parts

Yes, anything closest to your pain will hurt, but if you are the type who takes pain easily than go for it.

if you do not have a lot of meat on your rib bones you will not enjoy it. needles sticking in bones hurt.
