Several decades ago the US Defence Department was called the Department of War. Should Democrats try to bring back the old name? The reason for this question is that the current name is misleading. Nowdays the Defence Department is mostly involved in attacking or occupying other countries, not in defending US. There is no country on earth capable of attacking the US.

Excellent question and a good idea... maybe this would remind ppl of what we, as a nation, are REALLY doing.

Dept of War definitely reflects reality more then Dept of Defense, for sure...

I don't know about you but I am fed up with this freaking word game... global warming no no it's climate change to make ppl like it better, estate tax no no it's a death tax so ppl won't like it, ETC....

If you have to change the name of something to make me like or dislike it more then you are trying to manipulate me... that's how I feel about it.

Prior to the "Defense Department" we had the "Department of War" which was the Army and the "Department of the Navy" which was the Navy.

The Defense Department was set up to put ALL of the branches (including the new Air Force) under one roof and it was hoped, to make them work together better. It really did not change anything except instead of TWO cabinet officers you only have one.

I agree, but naw, mistakes are made, we forget easily. Lower gas and get votes, don't win and watch it rise again.
We also have a new National Clandestine Service, and here is a list.
Strategic Support Branch
Defense Intelligence Agency
Add that to
HSA
SDI
wait, didn't we stop Star Wars?
Oh well, vote or don't, doesn't seem to matter anymore.

What color is the sky in your world? Did you miss 9-11?
Did you miss Iraq refusal to let UN weapons inspectors in? That is what started all of this. Do not just listen to today's news & a "everything is wrong with America" Congress. Put it all in context & remember history. I do not care what you call it, as long as they continue to stop another 9-11. Oh yeah, we have not had another - maybe the terrorist are occupied in Afghanistan & Iraq. Better than here!

Department of War is appropriate because the US is not actually defending itself but is waging war against countries that have threats to its security. Thus, the Department of Defense is now a misnomer.

I think we should go even further and call it "the Department of Attack."
