I'm sure it's different from place to place but I'm assuming you just need to bring your permit....

Like you mentioned, it is different from state to state. You could check out DMV.ORG using the link below to view their "first-time drivers" section. It usually lists what you will need to do before actually taking the behind the wheel test and what you need to bring with you to the DMV.

Yes your permit. The laws have changed. In NY you have to have a certain number of hours on your permit in order to get your license. When I took mine you just needed a defensive drivers course as well which is basically an entire day of an instructor teaching and you get the certificate. It also brought the insurance down as well.

Usually your permit, the paper that lists your driving hours with the liscenced drivers signature(if aplicable) a vehicle with the liscenced driver and proof of insurance ( so that you can use that car to take the test in), your state ID if not your social security card and birth certificate and any papers that you think you might need, if not call 311 and ask information, or ask them to transfer you to the correct department.

Many of the previous answers are very good, but you still need to check with the DMV just to be sure. Each state is different. I like the one of a parent to drive you home in case you fail. lol

Picture ID, permit, and some state may require proof that you are in school. Call the DVM in your state and ask them what you need to be sure.
