I am thinking about installing this, but when will they cut the support like they did with 98 and ME?

They will inevitably do this at some point, especially as XP is effectively just 2000 with some extra bells and whistles added-on, but lots of businesses are still using 2000 because it's solid and well supported by third-parties so I wouldn't be worried about them withdrawing support any time soon. Also, 2000 and XP are so similar 'under the hood' that it'll be pretty easy for MS to just keep supporting 2000 as long as they're continuing to support XP because any changes they need to make will be pretty much the same for both operating systems. Win98 on the other hand was vastly different from both 2000 and XP so it made sense at Microsoft's end to stop supporting it as soon as they could because it was a lot more hassle to maintain.

Yes I don't now the time line, but Microsoft has only been issuing security updates for some time.

Prepare for this event by exploring the open source community. There are many, free, reliable and up to date operating systems available. Once you have one installed you gain access to thousands of free programs.
