I have an upcoming hike soon and am wondering what type of food to pack. I'll probably eat some breafast at home before I drive to the trailhead. I'll definitely bring water, about 2.5 liters. Should I bring a ham sandwich? Energy bar? what? i have no clue.

Water, more than you need.
Nuts, trail mix, cereal that you like to snack on, crackers, jerky....anything that carries well in a ziplock bag.

Tread lightly! Don't disturb nature and carry out all your trash plus any you find on the trail.

You can bring pretty much any food. For a five hour hike at that time of day, I wouldn't bring a lot. Bring more than enough water though. Check the weather forecast and be prepared for possible weather changes and pack a survival kit in case you get lost, injured, or stuck on the trail for some other reason. Staying dry and warm in an emergency situation is paramount. It may sound ridiculous for a half day hike but people die every year by not being prepared on short hikes.
First leave a travel plan with someone that you will check in with when you get back. Then, a kit.
Here is a possible kit (it doesn't have to be huge)
rain gear or poncho
jacket (waterproof jacket takes care of first two items)
signal mirror
waterproof matches
fire starter (cotton balls with vaseline work great)
first aid kit
small flashlight
large trash bag (can be used to stay dry, to build shelter, keep clothes dry, etc.)

Well I know that in the military, we had to hike and march and pretty much everything else on foot, bike or atv. I thought the best things were to eat light but enough in the morning( it will catch up to you if you eat big) LOTS OF WATER you can never be to sure when it comes to water. Energy bars-no, granolabars yes, even the ones with the filling are better than energy bars. Alot of the energy bars these days give you a rush for about an hour if your lucky, then drop you like a fly. Pack a good size lunch if you decide to stop for awhile, rest until your food settles then hit the trail again.

Take easy to carry snack food that you can eat while hiking. Energy bars are ok, but I prefer a zip lock bag of dry cereral. I like a pick me up treat at the turning around, mid point of a hike. A can of soup (you can heat it up over a candle or other fire source), canned peaches (yeah the cans weight a bit , but its my treat and the can doubles if I need to boil water). Cheese and crackers are nice and chocolate bars are good too. Basically weigh the calories vs. weight and enjoy. If you want to be safe in warmer weather take a can of SPAM and some bread/ crackers and make a ham sandwich rather than carrying something that could spoil. Make sure to carry a trash bag to carry your stuff out with you. Have fun and happy hiking.

Well since it is not over night you can really bring whatever you want. A ham sandwhich would defiantly be fine and so would an energy bar. Personally, when i go hiking i like to bring trail mix, fruit, and a turkey sandwhich, not big on the ham. I also like to bring candy for some reason, just not chocolate if it is hot out. Really, you don't have to think that much about it, just don't bring anything that you are allergic to:) ^-^

try some trail mixes from the local dollar store or bulk foods area of a store and or just order pizzas delivered to the end of trail just kidding no pack what you would eat in a lunch eating a lot of food isnt a good idea if this is a long hike you may cramp up eat light juices water and gorp or trail mixes and a sandwitch freeze the waters or juices over night then pack to keep every thing cool cool and wrap the foods that are cool with the waters in a plastic bag then offer to carry the trash out in your empty trash bags

Forget the energy bar...bring a banana!! They provide a great energy boost, and are full of good things for you. OK, that takes care of your snack on the way up.

Lunch at the peak of the hike? Be careful not to bring anything that will spoil if your not carrying a cooler (i.e. anything with mayo). A ham sandwich should be okay...

Personally, I'd bring a little tupperware full of dried sausage, various cheeses, and crusty bread. If I hiked, I would deserve it!
