Is there a security system on a train that can tell if people are in one of the carts?

I see trains logging a very large number of carts, typically freight trains. They go on and on for a very long disatnce. Wouldn't it be easy to get onto the train (including stops the train makes and when it's moving) and just get off with a load of stuff? Isn't that a safety issue?

I don't know about overseas, but in the US it is very much a safety concern, for the misguided individual who hops a train looking for a free ride.

There are serious dangers from being around the equipment, whether moving or standing. Railroads are inherently dangerous in and of themselves.

In addition, there is the concern about the many unsavory characters that can be found around railroad yards.

Unmolested by these folks, there is still the railroad police and their zero tolerance policy for trespassers. Getting caught is a sure fire invitation to a local lock-up.

The message is simple. Stay off the trains and away from railroad property.

on the boxcars theres a peice of tape that cant be put back on if pulled off they put these on the doors to make sure they went tampered with
