I have flown Continental and Continental ExpressJet with pets several times. The pet has to be able to stand up and turn around comfortably in the carrying bag, and it must be kept under the seat. It also counts as your carry-on, so make sure that you check everything else. They've always been extremely helpful, and let me board before everyone else so that I can get situated. I suggest booking way ahead of time, because the airlines I have looked at only allow one pet in the cabin per flight, so you need to be the first one to book a pet. With Continental it costs $80 each way, and I think that's pretty much a standard price. I haven't flown with a pet since the new liquid regulations, and I'm not sure how that would work since you are required to supply the pet with food and water. Probably just empty the water just before security, then purchase a bottle of water after entering the sterile area to replinish his or her water dish.

most airlines will allow pets in cabin - usually a limit of 2 total except for Southwest - advance reservations are required.
and restrictions apply to size/dimensions -
During summer months - there are pet embargos if they were to travel down below - usually May-August.
Check United to Denver -
Their website will give you information regarding pets and what will also be needed from a vet

Delta and Alitalia allow small dogs. I flew in December to Italy and there were dogs on both of these airlines.
